The latest iteration of the ErgoX split keyboard provides a perfect example of how innovative OEM solutions can enhance the user experience. Let’s dive into the engineering advancements behind this design, which highlights our capability to quickly adapt and provide tailored solutions from concept to production.

Key Design Changes & Engineering Innovations

The updated ErgoX split keyboard incorporates several improvements over the original design, with the focus on optimizing user comfort and functionality. Here’s a breakdown of the tech upgrades:

  • Encoder Positioning: The two encoders have been re-positioned to the F-function key row for better accessibility, offering alternative locations for finger placement. This ensures that even users who aren’t accustomed to certain finger stretches can operate the keyboard with ease. It also provides an opportunity for additional custom shortcuts.

  • Audio Connector Update: A new 3.5mm audio connector is used, with a direct TX to TX and RX to RX connection. This eliminates issues caused by common audio cables with only three channels, ensuring the keyboard works flawlessly with audio setups.

  • Identification Resistors: Added two resistors to support seamless identification of left and right-hand keyboards, allowing users to connect USB cables without worrying about fixed positions. This flexibility is key for modern ergonomic devices.

  • OLED Integration: The design includes an interface for a 128×32 OLED screen, which could potentially enhance the user experience with status displays or additional functions, though it hasn’t been implemented yet. It’s a future-proof design, offering a foundation for expansion.

PCB Design and Adjustments: The MCU (RP2040) was moved for optimal positioning. The previous design utilized a sandwich-style acrylic case, but with this model, we’ve moved the MCU for better placement inside a fully enclosed casing. The board now aligns closer to the top edge, improving cable management and reducing the need for large cutouts.

Enclosure and Assembly: The newly designed enclosure exhibits a balance of simplicity and functionality, characterized by a robust and aesthetically appealing structure. Modifications to the design have been implemented to enhance assembly efficiency through the incorporation of support pillars at the base. This design feature ensures secure retention of the printed circuit board (PCB) while facilitating straightforward access for maintenance and upgrades.
